Summary

The lighthouse at West 9th Street in 1870. The first Cleveland Lighthouse was built in 1829 on a bluff at the north end of Water (9th) Street. Soon after this photo was taken, with the help of a $45,000 appropriation from Congress, a new Victorian Gothic style lighthouse was completed in early 1873. The Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead Lighthouse, the large structure that remains standing today, began operation at the eastern end of the extended western breakwater on March 25, 1911, according to Lighthousefriends.com.
