description

Summary

British paratroopers, who jumped here during World War II, listen to U.K. Lt. Col. Oliver Kingsbury, commander of 2nd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment Sept. 19, during a ceremony commemorating the history of the historic drop zone here. The event, which marked the 71st anniversary of Operation Market Garden, the largest Airborne jump in history, hosted attendees who outlined more than a kilometer of the drop zone’s border. Many surrounded the Airborne Monument in Ginkel Heide, which stands for Market Garden’s fallen paratroopers, overlooking the historic drop zone in the town of Ede. The commemoration brought together approximately 1,000 allied paratroopers from the seven NATO allies for several days of combined airborne operations and ceremonies. Market Garden was the largest airborne operation in history, taking place from Sept. 17-25, 1944.
