description

Summary

Small blue plate featuring "The Historic Elm" which once stood in Pittsfield Massachusetts. At its maturity, the elm tree stood 128 feet high and had a 28 foot circumference. Underneath it's branches, the pastor of a local church rallied the men in his congregation to form the Berkshire minutemen, who marched on Bennington during the Revolutionary War. Later, the Marquis de Lafayette passed under the tree when he was in town in 1825. As the century wore on, lightning strikes damaged the tree. In 1863, the 350 year old tree was cut down.; American Historical, The Historic Elm
