This movement breaks off on a sudden detached chord of the diminishedseventh as the curtain rises. APT I SCENE—A Public Square in SevilleThe curtain rises on a street in Seville, gay with an animated throng. In the fore-ground are the military guard stationed in front of their quarters. The cigarette factorylies to the right, and a bridge across the river is seen in the background. Among the crowd whichthrongs the stage a young girlmay be seen searching for afamiliar face. It is Micaela,the maiden whom Jose has leftbehind in his native village.The soldiers accost her, andfrom them she learns of herlovers absence. She declinesthe invitation to remain, anddeparts hastily. The cigarette girls nowemerge from the factory, fill-ing the air with the smoke oftheir cigarettes, and with themCarmen, who answers thesalutations of her admirersamong the men by singing thegay Habanera.
