Summary

Horses at the Beatys Butte Wild Horse Training Facility, October 16, 2017, by Greg Shine, BLM.
The first public-private partnership of its kind, the Beatys Butte Wild Horse Gather, Fertility Control and Training Program is designed to reduce or eliminate the number of excess horses from the Beatys Butte Herd Management Area that are never adopted and end up in BLM's off-range pastures at taxpayer expense.
Central to the program’s success is the Beatys Butte Wild Horse Training Facility in Adel, Oregon.
The program is designed around a three-pronged strategy:
• Bait-trapping horses routinely to remove excess horses in smaller numbers;
• Training the surplus horses and offering them for sale; and
• Administering a fertility-control drug to captured mares to slow herd reproduction rates.
“It takes a lot of time and experience to train a wild horse,” said James Price, Lakeview BLM Wild Horse and Burro Specialist. “By starting them under saddle, we’re making it possible for an experienced rider to take advantage of some very high quality training.
