Basel, Universitätsbibliothek, AN VIII 45, f. 11r – Book of Hours

This magnificent book of hours probably was created in the third quarter of the 15th century in Northern Italy. The style of the painting and of the veneration of the saints suggests the region around Modena, Este, Ferrara. The historiated initials in the calendar show the twelve months; at the beginning of the offices there are ornamental pages with illustrations mostly from the life of Christ. The miniatures and initials are executed in opaque colors and in gold. In the 20th century, this manuscript came to the university library from the Kunstmuseum Basel.
Deutsch: Das prunkvoll gestaltete Stundenbuch dürfte im dritten Viertel des 15. Jahrhunderts in Norditalien entstanden sein. Malerei und Heiligenverehrung weisen in die Region um Modena, Este, Ferrara. Die historisierten Initialen im Kalender zeigen die zwölf Monate, zu Beginn der Offizien stehen Zierseiten mit Darstellungen hauptsächlich aus dem Leben Christi. Die Miniaturen und Initialen sind mit Deckfarbenmalerei und Gold gestaltet. Die Handschrift kam im 20. Jahrhundert aus dem Kunstmuseum Basel in die Universitätsbibliothek. .

Le style des peintures et le choix des saints vénérés indiquent la région de Modène, Este et Ferrare. Les initiales historiées dans le calendrier illustrent les douze mois de l’année; au début des offices, les pages sont décorées principalement avec des scènes de la vie du Christ. Les miniatures et les initiales sont réalisées a tempera et en or. Le manuscrit est entré au XXème siècle dans la bibliothèque universitaire en provenance du Kunstmuseum de Bâle. .
Italiano: Lo sfarzoso Libro d'Ore fu probabilmente allestito nel terzo quarto del XV secolo nell'Italia del Nord. Lo stile delle miniature e la scelta dei santi da venerare rimandano alla regione intorno a Modena, Este, Ferrara. Nel calendario le iniziali con storie illustrano i dodici mesi, all'inizio degli Uffici ci sono delle pagine decorate con rappresentazioni principalmente della vita di Cristo. Le miniature e le iniziali sono realizzate con pittura a tempera e oro. Il manoscritto giunse nel sec. XX nella biblioteca universitaria dal Kunstmuseum di Basilea.
