(Aug. 22, 2017) Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Alejandro Lazo, left, assigned to the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), trains Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Sofia Knight during a CrossFit workout at Huntington Hall in Newport News, Va. George Washington is undergoing a refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipyard. RCOH is a four-year project performed only once during a carrier's 50-year service life that includes refueling of the ship's two nuclear reactors as well as significant repairs, upgrades and modernization. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
