Life in Africa is controlled chiefly by Vegetation belts. On the equator is the steaming rain forest; north and south of it Stretch grassy and shrubby savannas (Sudan) that give way to true des- erts such as the Sahara in the north and the Kalahari in the south. Beyond these are the Mediterranean regions of the Atlas lands, and South Africa. Only the savanna and Mediterranean belts, the mountains in the east, and the oases in the desert are suitable for farming. Africa is poor in oil and coal but rieh in metals. Copper and radium from Katanga pay for a 1000-mile railway; half of the world's gold and diamonds come from the continent. Transportation is the chief problem. Rivers are füll of rapids; and roads and railways are lacking; however, the airplane is play- ing an increasing part in the development of Africa. f'rSIr' A Ji».k.T<rv ^ \ firJ > I Metra FCffl !>ldMi Ma :^ «K »^ «.^â¢^ ?%^^; 'â¢"»»bo NrÃ>: % (â Oaodlai â¢R/ V *mi ~it) ^k "*«) â¢Â»a B.^ Mo ncued i?)ad« S^^ *fa/( *f6, '^ â¢â¢!â \i^^ ^"«fl 6^x > ^°fy* % '«â¢i % m, 'L./'\ SPANISH MOROCC My^ira (Po, CANARY IS Political French British Portuguese Spanish Belgian Italian GAMBIA
