At sea aboard USS Abraham Lincoln An F/A-18C "Hornet" assigned to the Fist of the Fleet of Strike Fighter Squadron Two Five (VFA-25), makes an arrested landing aboard the aircraft carrier. Approaching at around 135 knots, the pilot is aiming for the number #3 wire of four in an 80-foot patch of flight deck. Lincoln and its embarked Carrier Air Wing One Four (CVW-14) are conducting combat missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Southern Watch. Aircraft carriers are warships that act as airbases for carrier-based aircraft. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
