At sea aboard USS George Washington Aviation Boatswain's Mate 3rd Class Heath Oelman from Ackley, IA, helps guide the launch bar onto the shuttle of catapult three as an EA-6B "Prowler" assigned to the Scorpions from Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron One Three Two (VAQ 132) prepares to launch from the ships flight deck. The Prowler provides an umbrella of protection over strike aircraft, ground troops, and ships by jamming enemy radar, electronic data-links, and communications. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
