Gravure en taille-douce it is on metal,called in French, a term perhaps implying the joy of the craftsmanin engraving the line which is to be the design in itself, rather thana mere negative value to be laboriously removed. For a true appreciation of prints, which form the chief materialfor our study, it is essential to understand the main principles of thevarious processes by which plates may be engraved.
