ngs; right hand resting on table, on which is ablack soft hat, left hand on hip, and holding white gloves withgold gauntlets. Canvas, 94 inches high x 58 inches. Painted for the Company in 1733. At a Court held on December 7, 1732, it was ordered thatthe late Master, Mr. Alderman Salter, be desired to set for hispicture, to be drawn by such hand as is most agreeable to him. In the Masters Accounts for 1733-4 is the following: Item—paid for the picture and frame of Mr. Alderman Salter ..... £73 15s. The Records and Accounts give no clue as to the painterof this portrait. The authorship has been determined by a com-parison with a mezzotint portrait of Salter when Lord Mayor,a copy of which was acquired by the Company in 1904 (See No.141). In this engraving, which is from a painting by Richard-son, the face is older and the insignia of office are added.Otherwise, in every detail of dress and attitude the correspondenceis exact, but in the engraving the lower part of the picture has 40

been cut off, converting the full-length into a three-quarters.Whether Richardson painted another portrait in Salters Mayor-alty or whether the engraver made the alterations himself, is amatter for speculation. There is a water-colour copy of the picture in the GuildhallLibrary. Son of Thomas Salter and Ann his wife.
