Summary

A harbour scene with fishing boats
A coastal scene showing fishing boats which may have become becalmed. In 1835 the artist first exhibited a similar subject at the Royal Academy entitled ‘Honfleur Fishing Boats’.
In this painting a fisherman in a red hat stands on the shore. He is leaning against his boat which has been pulled up on to the beach with the harbour wall above him on the left. He stares out of the picture space and is looking away from the harbour. Behind him on the right a group of three fishing boats appear to be becalmed. In the distance beyond them is the outline of a port. A paddle steamer is shown on the far right.
