Summary

80-G-79395: German U-boat incident #3979. Plane attack on August 7, 1943, on two German submarines, U-66 (escaped) and U-117 (sunk) by Lieutenant C.R. Stapler, USN, from USS Card (CVE 11). U-117 was damaged by Lieutenant Junior Grade Sallenger and unable to submerge. Believed sunk after four successive attacks, the large U-boat, a 1600 ton minelayer supply boat, remained on the surface and soon two TBF’s, piloted by Lieutenant C. R. Stapler and Lieutenant Junior Grade J.C. Ferney and two F4Fs, piloted by N.D. Hodson and Lieutenant E.E. Jackson arrived and continued the attack on it. (8/18/2015).
