Summary

WASHINGTON (Dec. 5, 2019) Retired Adm. John Harvey (left) presents the Distinguished Flying Cross, posthumously awarded Lt. Thomas Evert, to Thomas Evert Petri, Evert's son (center), and Lou Podolske, Evert's cousin (right), during an awards cermony at the capital building Dec. 5. Thomas Evert recieved the Flying Cross due to distinguished acts of heroism performed when he and his PB4Y Liberator bomber crew sank a German U-boat during World War II. He and the crew later perished during a subsequent mission. Due to distinguished acts of heroism while participating in an aerial fight, Evert was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and each member of the crew was awarded the Air Medal. Naval History and Heritage Command located at the Washington Navy Yard, is responsible for the preservation, analysis and dissemination of U.S. naval history and heritage.
