Carl Heinrich Bloch (1834-1890) was a Danish painter known for his religious and historical paintings. He was born on 23 May 1834 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Bloch was trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and later studied in Italy, where he was influenced by Renaissance art. Bloch's work often focused on biblical and historical themes, and he gained recognition for his skilful use of colour, composition and attention to detail. One of his most famous paintings is The Resurrection of Lazarus, which depicts the biblical scene of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Another notable series of paintings by Bloch are his depictions of scenes from the life of Christ. These paintings, characterised by their emotional depth and realism, have had a significant impact on the visual representation of biblical narratives. Carl Bloch's art gained popularity not only in Denmark but also internationally. His paintings can be found in museums and collections around the world. Despite his relatively short life, Bloch's work has left a lasting legacy and he is considered one of the most important religious painters of the 19th century.
