Auf diesem undatierten Foto des Naval History and Heritage Command entspannt sich die Besatzung der USS Monitor kurz vor ihrem Turm. Der in Brooklyn gebaute Monitor schrieb nautische Geschichte, nachdem er in 118 Tagen entworfen und montiert und dann am 25. Februar 1862 in Betrieb genommen wurde. Monitor kämpfte in der Schlacht von Hampton Roads am 9. März 1862 gegen CSS Virginia. Es war die erste Schlacht zwischen zwei Eisenhütten und läutete das Ende der Ära der Holzschiffe ein.
