According to Fnhr (7), the first Btep in the morbid processis the occurrence of endometritis in the mother, leading to placental hyper-plasia, to overfilling of the foetal circulation with resulting obstructionami oedema ; the (edema in the placenta itself is due to secondary obstruc-tion in it. The difficulties in accepting any of these theories are great, itbeing often impossible to distinguish between causes and effects; but itseems clear that the foetal dropsy is a manifestation of several differentpathological processes, and this is quite in keeping with what is known ofadult dropsy. In one of my observations the proportion of proteids in theperitoneal effusion was so small as to suggest a blood-dropsy; but that itmay also be obstructive or inflammatory in origin seems beyond doubt.
