EPILEPSY AND ITS TREATMENTBY ELECTRICITY. Dr. W. H. Walling, in the MedicalBrief, mentions a case of epilepsy oftwelve years standing which was greatlybenefited by electricity—faradization ofthe spine, stomach and abdomen, and gal-vanization of the sympathetic. Then theanode was placed below the mastoid proc-ess, toward the median line, and thecathode on the forehead near the lefttemple, and one-half a milliampere allowedto pass for two minutes. The electrodeswere cautiously changed, and the currentcontinued for from three to five minutes.Improvement continued for a time, but thedoctor had to use the tribromide of goldand the oxybromideof arsenic to completethe cure. Paolo (Paul) Zacghias. PAOLO (PAUL) ZACCHIAS. Wc present a portrait of this dis-tinguished man. reproduced from theMedico-Legal Journal (Vol. III. Xo. 3).and was obtained by that journal fromDr. Herman Karnfeld. of Grottkau, Silesia,who had received a portrait of him froma friend in Florence, copied from an origi-nal painting. Paul Zacchias was born in Rome in 1584.and died there in 1659. in the fullnessof his mental vigor at 75. He was thefather of medico-legal science. To himis due the systematizing of that peculiarcombination which compels the jurist toexamine into the physico-mental conditionof the man who stands charged with vio-lating the law. and forces the physicist toinquire into the working of the physio-logical machine, in order to trace a dis-order, if any there be, and to bring to thelight of day the mysterious cause thatdestroved the harmony between mind and body, thus determining the responsibilityof the will power and the irresponsibility offatality.
