Alopecia is guarded against by usinga piece of sole leather, glued to a thin sheet of aluminum. Asmall compression cylinder, 4 or 4^ inches in diameter, willimprove the quality of the plates. The most valuable platesare those which are thin and slightly underexposed rather thanthose which are dense, for slight changes in density will besought for more often than gross alterations of bone detail. The fact that a skiagram of the diseased ear is often value-less without comparison with the other or normal ear bringsup the all-important question, whether both mastoids of agiven individual are normally identical in density and struc-ture, or approximately so. Since variations are common inall parts of the body, the same may be expected in the mastoidregion, yet I have found the closest resemblance of the twosides in most of the normal cases examined.
