ant, they cannot inferthat the defendant was negligent merely because the plaintiff after-wards suffered from X-ray burn, for the cause of the burn may bebeyond human knowledge, and even expert experience may not besufficiently uniform to indicate a sure means of preventing it. Owingto the limitations of human knowledge, the exercise of every reason-able care does not always prevent accidents, and this is especiallytrue in dealing with such comparatively little known forces as elec-tricity and X-rays. The jury cannot find the defendant guilty ofthe negligence alleged in the complaint unless it can find in the proofssome particular act of negligence which caused the burn. To punishthe defendant because he cannot explain the cause of the burn isnot necessarily to punish him because ho has done wrong, but maybe to punish him because he does not know something which sciencecannot find out, or has thus far been unable to find out. That wouldbe manifestly unfair, and the law will not do it.

The indications for the useof radiant lightand heat include, as suggested, (1) the reliefof all conditions arising from exposure tothe X ray in which the processes of metabo-lism have been exhibited, as when there issterility, lowered vitality of tissues, or whenthe secretions or other functions have beensuspended. (2) These forms of radiant ener-gy are valuable in conditions of poor meta-bolism in which the secretions of the skin, from any cause, have become inactive, orwhere an active elimination by all theemunctories is indicated, as in Brightsdisease, rheumatism, or gout. (3) In arterio-sclerosis and in other conditions where theheart is working against a condition of higharterial tension, it is indicated in all septicand toxic processes, favoring in a largedegree the elimination of the products of in-fection.
