Thecochlear nerve arises from the anterior nucleus (FivT). and in a small portionof gray substance which surrounds the dorsal and external of these nuclei, thetuberculuni acusticum (T.ac). Its central continuation is well known, andhas been followed for a long distance. From the median side of the nucleus(i-X) proceeds a large transverse bundle, the corpus trapezoides (Ctrp), whichin animals lies free in front of the fibres of the pons, but in men, however, is ORIGIN AND CONTINUATION OF THE AUDITORY NERVE. 603 covered by then1. The greatest portion of it crosses the middle line and endsin the folded gray mass of the superior olivary body on the opposite side (oO),while a smaller portion ends directly in the superior olivary body of the sameside.
