Heart and pericardium healthy.Liver enlarged, soft, and friable, presenting a pale surface on section ;spleen healthy. The left kidney, supra-renal capsule, and ureter were ILLUSTRATIVE CASUS. 559 absent. The right kidney was considerably enlarged, and weighed 14^ oz.On section, there was a large cavity at the upper part, occupying one-fifth of the entire kidney, filled with pus, and two other very muchsmaller purulent cavities in the central part of the organ (see fig. 69).The cortical portion was seen to be much hypertrophied, but pale, exceptthe parts situated between the pyramids, which were dotted over with redpoints ; the pyramidal portion was atrophied and almost entirely absent.The pelvis was dilated and divided into pouch-like enlargements, thelining membrane being studded over with small whitish deposits of tuber-

About half an ounce of pus escaped fromthe ureter on section. The ureter was dilated at its commencement andnear its termination, where it easily admitted the forefinger ; but theopening into the bladder was so small that it could not be detected untila probe had been passed from without. A slight depression marked theposition for the entrance of the left ureter, of which, however, no tracecould be found. The fundus of the Madder was covered with tuberculardeposit, which was limited to this part, the body and summit being 560 TUBERCLE OF THE KIDNEY. entirely free. The mucous membrane of the affected part was muchbroken down in structure, and in parts almost ulcerated through ; thewalls of the bladder and ureter were considerably thickened.
