They found none, and nosmoke was seen, nor was there ever any answer to that whichdaily we allowed to rise. The next morning while I was say-ing mass two gunshots were heard far away in the thickettowards the Guadalupe River. Some one went to see who itwas, and it proved to be three^ of the soldiers who belongedto the garrisons of Vizcaya. They came up, and we asked themabout their journey, and they told us of hardships as follows: On the second day of the Easter feast they had arrived atSaltillo, namely, twenty soldiers of the two presidios of Vizcaya 1 The Lavaca. 2 Qn April 27 (Itinerary). 3 According to the Itinerary, on the 28th De Leon went up the Guadalupesix leagues and returned, and on the 29th set out for the Tejas, going six leaguesthat day. ^ On the 30th the Itinerary mentions the same incident but gives the num-ber of soldiers as two. 1
