XII.) DISCOVERY OF COFFINS. 321 gathered from the crumbHng remains; but no ornaments ofgold or silver were discovered at Niffer, though it appearsthat the Arabs frequently find them in similar coffins fromother ruins in southern Mesopotamia.

Glazed Coffins from Babylonia, in the British Museum. From a curious relic in terracotta, discovered and sent tothis country by Mr. Loftus, we learnthe manner in which the dead wereplaced in these singular coffins. Itrepresents the corpse of a man in oneof the sarcophagi I have described.The body and extremities are swathedin linen, the bands of which are veryclearly shown in the clay figure. Theywere probably smeared over with bitu-men to preserve them; the head andhands were left uncovered. The manrepresented in the model wears a kindof flat turban, and his hair falls in ring-lets on his shoulders. His beard is ela-borately curled, like that of the ancient Terracotta Model of a Body Assyrians. In each hand he holds a ^ ^°^- kind of mace wltla a circular top, probably some religious Y
