These demonstrate characteristics of thereflex in different diseases that can be shown in no other way. The apparatuscan also be used to record a variety of vital phenomena of interest to neurolo-gists, such as the Babinsky reflex, ankle clonus, tremors, exhaustion of reflex, and for numerous other purposes, some of which are here illustrated. Since constructing this machine I have discovered that it is not the firstmade for the purpose, as I had believed, but it is original, in that it was con-structed without any knowledge of a pre-existing apparatus of that kind, and isconstructed on different principles from its predecessor. W. von Bechterew reported a machine of his own in the Nearologisches Cen-tralblatt, November 2, 1892, which would write the curve of a knee-jerk and

The accompanying illustration (Fig. 1) shows one of the curves made byVon Bechterews apparatus Paradoxical as it seems, the strong point in hisapparatus is also the weak point, i. e., the rubber-covered drum which is used(the Marey compression apparatus) makes it very sensitive to any impulse, butthe resiliency of the rubber so modifies the curve that it is not a true record ofthe reflex. (1) It imposes a resistance to pressure, which makes a gradualcurve on the up-stroke; and (2) when the pressure of the short arm is taken offthe rubber by the foot falling back to its first position, there is added the resil-iency of the rubber (which had been displac
