TREE SWALLOW PLAYING WITH A FEATHERNote the detail with which the feathers of the wing are drawn Mr. Brandreth has certainly not detracted from the beauty of his figuresof birds by giving them their due allotment of feathers; he has thereby greatlyincreased their charm to the bird student who is as much pained by a pictureof a five-primaried Swallow as he would be by that of a two-fingered man. But Mr. Brandreth is something more than a gifted and accurate drawer ofbirds. Among artists of his class his pictures show that he has already attainedan unusual measure of success in placing his bird in the landscape, or perhaps Ishould say in placing landscape about his bird. The purposes of scientific illustration to aid in the identification of the
