In the Hiddeford central office there wasthe same terrific tempo that characterizedall of the central offices in the fire area.Operators worked continuously without re-turning to their homes as all relief agenciesvirtually poured their calls through thecentral office as they attempted to evacu-ate families in the vicinity of the approach-ing fire. One operator answered a callfrom a woman on an outlying road whohad been isolated in a farm house withher two children and had no means of leav-ing. They were rescued by Red Crossworkers sent to the scene by the operator. As in other affected areas, the centraloffice was the principal means of communi-cation for the police and fire-fighting agen-cies.
