onghold inwhich Dr. Wright, Mr. Wilson, and others have so longtaken refuge. The most formidable redoubt was theCalaveras skull (Plates Vn.-VHL). The legend of the skull is that it was found by a Mr.Mattison in February, 1866, while working at the bottomof a mine at a depth of 130 feet from the surface. It laynear the bottom of a bed of gravel within a few feet of therock bed. According to Whitneys statement, Mattisondid not at once recognise it to be a skull, being so em-bedded and incrustated with earthy and stony material, but thought it to be a piece of the root of a tree. Fromthe mine it was carried to the office of a local merchant, where, upon being partially cleaned by a clerk, it wasrecognised as a human skull. Subsequently it was sentto Dr. Jones, an enthusiastic collector of natural historyspecimens, who, regarding the skull as of great interest, sent it to the State Geological Survey in San Francisco, and thus it fell into the hands of Professor Whitney.
