a matter of such uniform con-stancy in the venereal squamous affections, has not its founda-tion in the pathological state of the skin any more than it hasin the other syphilodermata. In this connection, I submit thefollowing case, which affords a striking illustration of the liabil-ity to blunder to which the wisest men are exposed when underthe guidance of the old but false doctrine here alluded to, andwhich was so long held in almost sacred repute. Case. — I once knew an error in diagnosis to be committedby an eminent surgeon, in one of our chief cities, in referenceto this particular type of syphiloderma. He gave his writtenopinion that a certain case was not venereal because the pecu-liar discoloration did not exist. The patient came to Boston.It was in September, 18—. He was of diminutive stature, emaciated andfceble ; could scarcely walk a hundred rods ; his appetite wasmiserable ; he had much trouble from constipation ; his tonguewas coated ; the pulse one hundred ; and therj was extremepallor of countenance. There were several squamous blotcheson the face, varying in size from that of a ten-cent piece totwice that bigness, and slightly elevated above the adjacentsound skin. Some of them had healed from the centre andpresented an annulate figure. Large portions of integumentcovering the body and extremities were occupied by the erup-tion in different stages of development. The most singularand interesting specimens consisted of annular, tuberculo-crus-taccous patches, of various dimensions.
