The dress of Arab womenusually consists of a white striped shawl,called a haik, made of coarse or fine stuffaccording to the social position and wealthof the wearer, which is thrown over thehead, and completely veils the user fromhead to feet. Underneath this haik, ar-ranged across the lower part of the face sothat it covers all but the eyes, the bridge ofthe nose, and a small portion of the foreheadleft uncovered by the haik, is worn a hand-kerchief of white linen known as an adjar,which is fastened securely across the face.Sometimes, more especially in the towns,the adjar is of so gossamer-like a materialthat it forms but the thinnest disguise tothe wearers features. The effect of thissemi-transparent veil, and the uncoveredeyes, which are generally beautiful, dark,and expressive, is rather coquettish thanrepellent as one would suppose was theintention. In addition to the haik andadjay, Arab women out ofdoors wear wide, loose trou-sers, of the Turkish shape,slippers, and a chemise-likeundergarment of gauze orlinen according to their socialposition. The general effectof this costume is neither pic-turesque nor graceful. Thewomen present rather the ap-pearance of animated clothesbags ; and their walk becomesa curious shuffle.
