Return of Federal Foraging Parties into Camp, Near Annandale Chapel, Va. Depicted are Union soldiers returning to their camp on the grounds of the Annandale Methodist Chapel, Annandale, Va. Published in the November 23, 1862, edition of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper; re-published in The Soldier in Our Civil War: A Pictorial History of the Conflict, 1861–1865, Illustrating the Valor of the Soldier as Displayed on the Battle-Field (1890). Note: Annandale was behind Union lines during most of the Civil War, and following the Second Battle of Manassas in late August 1862, the church was used as temporary quarters by Union soldiers. Eventually the troops dismantled the church in building their winter quarters.Encyclopedia of Virginia

Early on the 0th of October a force of about1,400 Confederates, under Generalsoirronin, isai. Anderson and Buggies, landed onSanta Rosa Island, about fonr miles from theencampment of Wilsons Zouaves, and advancedupon the latter, in three columns, before daylight. The Zouaves, then numbering about ^00, endeav-ored to made a stand, but only for a moment, undwere forced to retreat to ihe cover of the Lincolnand Totten batteries, which had been erected beyondFort Pickens, leaving their camp in the bands ofthe enemy. Reinforced, however, by detachmentsunder Majors Arnold and Vogdes, Captains Heildtand Robinson, and Lieutenants DOrville, Shipleyand Zeeley, they returned and attacked the Con-federates, compelling them, after a lively fire, to i3(: THE SOLDIER IN OUR C/J/E irAR.

After this engagement, both sideskept reinforcing and strengtheningtheir position, until by the middle of ^the following November the garrison ^g.-it 1Wr Ii.-k.iis liml iu<T(.M*<( to 1.:-i.hjmen, still under Colonel Brown, and .that of the opposing forces to OS manyas (1,11(10 men, under General BraxtonBragg. The latter were distributed m %.-works extending from the Hnvy YardLo Fort McRae, in all about three anda half miles, and possessed as many atfourteen batteries of long and shorlrange artillery.
