On May 14 an offer was made by the firm of Lipmau, Wolfe &Co., to turn over their department store to the Emergency Corps uponany date they might select. The entire charge of this establishmentwas to be assumed by the organization for one day—ten per cent ofall sales to go to the regimental fund. To this generous offer wasadded the privilege of serving a mid-day lunch and introducing othersuitable features that would help to swell the treasury. This offer wasunanimously accepted and on May 17 the most novel scene everwitnessed in Portlands business history, was presented.
