FOURTH PERIOD 140 TORPHICH£N CHURCH referred to. Several of the windows of these chambers have side stone seats.The portion of the return of the south wall of the choir has a small mouldedcap with necking, as shown in Sketch (see Fig. 1250); the position of thiscap is higher than the caps of the large piers, and indicates that an arcadehas formerly been carried along the outside of this wall. The building tothe north of the north transept, of which indications remain, has had twowindows with side seats looking into the church ; their position is seen onthe cross Section. The lintels of these windows are old tombstones; thewest one (which cannot be w^ell seen, being almost built up) has a crossincised on it. On the other lintel is a sword and cross (see Fig. 1255),called by the villagers the sword of Wallace, evidently a lingeringreminiscence of the year 1298, when Wallace had his headquarters atTorphichen, as an existing charter of that date shows.
