He took Fort Nelson,on Hudson Bay: captured and demolished FortPemaquid, built for the protection of the NewEngland settlements; laid waste all the Britishposts on the island of Newfoundland: and. hav-ing defeated three English vessels with his one,reduced Fort Bourbon, the last station of theHudsons Bay Company. In 1690 he ascendedthe Mississippi for some distance, and built FortBiIo.\i at the head of Biloxi Bay. This post heremoved to Mobile in 1701. In 1706 he capturedthe island of Nevis. He was considered theablest officer in the French naval service of histime, and is generally called the founder ofLouisiana.
