Friedrich Sustris was a German architect and painter of the Renaissance. Born in Italy around 1540, he was the son of the Italian architect and sculptor Benedetto Sustris. Friedrich Sustris worked in Munich, Germany, where he was appointed court architect by Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria in 1563. Sustris is known for his work on several important buildings in Munich, including the Hofgarten and the Residenz. He also designed the Alte Pinakothek art museum, which was completed after his death. In addition to his architectural work, Sustris was also a painter and some of his surviving paintings can be seen in the Residenz. Sustris's architectural style was influenced by Italian Renaissance architecture, but he also incorporated elements of German Gothic and Renaissance styles. He was known for his attention to detail and his use of decorative elements such as stucco and frescoes. Friedrich Sustris died in Munich in 1599, leaving behind a legacy of important buildings that are still admired and studied today.
