The oral cavity is lined with mucous membrane which is alwaysmoist in health. The part of the cavity between the lips and theteeth is the vestibule. The mouth contains the teeth and the tongue. The teeth are already described. The tongue lies in the floor of the mouth with its base curveddownward at the back and attached to the hyoid bone. It is com- 122 ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY FOR NURSES. posed of muscles, and covered with mucous membrane which formsa special fold underneath the tip of the tongue connecting it with thefloor; this fold is called the frenum lingua. When the frenum isshort we say the tongue is tied. A little clip with the scissors is often sufficient to free it, but this is done withcare as an artery runs forward very near the frenum. The dorsum, or superior surface of the tongue, is covered withsmall projections called papillcs, of three sizes,—the vallate, thelargest, forming a V-shaped row at the back; the fungiform, next insize, scattered over the surface but most numerous at the tip andsides, and bright red in color; and the filiform, the smallest, coveringthe anterior two-thirds of the dorsum and borders (Fig. 96). The tongue aids in mastication and swallowing, or deglutition. Itis also an important organ of speech and the principal organ of taste.
