The side roads, now covered with several inches ofclayey mould, are paved with 5 or 6-ins. of flints, manyof which are of quite an unusual size; and the ditches,which are nearly 2-ft. below the present level of theground, are filled with soil free from flint. The various beds of the vallum thin oft towards the sides,and each in ascending order tends to become more convexon its upper surface—an arrangement that would allowof water draining off easily. In constructing the roadthe builders evidently began on the lower, or south-eastside, and from the first arranged their beds horizontally.The sides of the vallum are not as steep as they formerlywere, for as much as 11-ins. of mould have gathered inthe angles between the raised road and the sideways;most of this is a stiff mould, similar in character to thatwhich covers the crown of the vallum and the sidewaysand ditches, but the soil under the turf in the angles SECTION THROUGH STAIWE STREET^r06.54-5XO^^y-uw. lftuit».l7,alk
