To get around this obstacle, theline between Beaufort and Loraine, a distanceof 30 miles, was relocated, and the new surveyshowed that the summit could be crossed at anelevation 250 feet lower than the old line, andthat the desired maximum grade of 43.3 feetper mile could be obtained by cutting a tunnelabout 1,800 feet in length. Including this re-construction, there are about eight different fuel used, and a considerable increase in the loadsthat can be hauled. Thus, the old grade of ShermanHill necessitated the assistance of fifteen extra loco-motives to carry trains over the grade, whereas sincethe change no extras whatever are required. Thetotal cost of the work has been put down at $15,000,-000, and it is estimated that the reduction in actualoperating expenses and the increase in earnings willenable the road to recover the outlay within a reason-able time.
