Their master was walking amongthem with a pipe in his mouth and a switch in his hand.He was a tall thin man, of a brown complexion ; his eyeswere sunk in his head, and his dark eyebrows were joinedin one. Virginia, holding Paul by the hand, drew near,and with much emotion begged him, for the love of God,to pardon his poor slave, who stood trembling a fewpaces behind. The planter at first paid little attentionto the children, who, he saw, were meanly dressed. Butwhen he observed the elegance of Virginias form andthe profusion of her beautiful light tresses which hadescaped from beneath her blue cap; when he heard thesoft tone of her voice, which trembled, as well as herwhole frame, while she implored his compassion; hetook his pipe from his mouth, and, lifting up his stick,swore, with a terrible oath, that he pardoned his slave,not for the love of Heaven, but of her who asked hisforgiveness.
