be is based on the principle of kin-ship ; that is to say, it is composed of a number ofkindred groups of agnates, who reckon descentthrough the father. But its constitution admits ofassociation within the tribe of a certain number ofalien groups, who are said to live within its shade.These are foreign allies introduced for active participa-tion in any blood feud which the tribe may have onhand. On the other hand, the tribe is subject toconstant loss by fission, when, in consequence of theirnomadic habits, one section breaks off and abandonsthe common land and water. This severance may betemporary or permanent, and in the latter case theindependent group sets up for itself. Among the Baloch the organisation is much looser.There is no eponymous ancestor, and the tribe itselfdoes not profess to be homogeneous. Outsiders fromall quarters are freely admitted to membership as valu-able allies to be used in the constant blood feuds inwhich the tribes are engaged. When such an outsider No. 6

The Balochare now gradually changing their mode of life fromthe nomadic to the pastoral. Their chief usually hasa fixed residence, but this never becomes the nucleusof a town. Most of them live in the country, wheretheir villages are collections of mud or stone walls,over which temporary roofs are erected.
