L'Enjambée Impériale (NAPOLEON 117)

description

Zusammenfassung

In this drawing, we see the Bourbon family watching from the balcony as Napoleon easily returns from Elba. The reactions vary from "let's get out of here" to "Guard the doors." The Duchess' comment includes a play on words: calotte is a bonnet (like the Jacobin bonnet), but it is also a slap in the face. With a slight spelling change, it becomes culotte, a reference to the radical mob during the Revolution. Two of the figures on the balcony wear extinguishers as hats. The Order of the Extinguishers was originally known during the time of Louis XIV, but resuscitated in the pages of the Yellow Dwarf magazine in the waning years of Napoleon's reign. The Extinguishers wanted to return to the ancien regime, extinguishing the ideas of Voltaire, Rousseau, and the Revolution.
