e flask is closed by a good three-hole cork.In the middle one is inserted a small dropping funnel; the sideholes carry the inlet and outlet tubes (Fig. 91). The stem ofthe funnel is previously filled with water by open-ing the cock, immersing the end in water andapplying suction. The inlet tube is connected witha Kipp carbon dioxide generator, and the outlettube with a nitrometer charged with a solution ofcaustic potash. Carbon dioxide is passed into theapparatus until all the gas escaping from the outlettube is absorbed by the potash. The current ofcarbon dioxide is then lessened and from the drop-ping funnel a mixture of 10 c.c. of concentratedhydrochloric acid and 10 c.c. water containing afew drops of platinic chloride, is allowed to flow in on the zincdust; the flask is finally heated. From the volume of hydrogenobtained the percentage of zinc in the zinc dust may be calcu-lated. The individual operations of this analysis are conductedas described under Determination of Nitrogen.
