gedruckt von: Ludwig Choris; gedruckt von: Langlumé. Porträt eines Mannes und einer Frau, Bewohner der Osterinsel. Eine Frau auf der linken Seite trägt einen Tuchhüllenrock. Der Mann rechts hat Tätowierungen im Gesicht, an Armen und Beinen und trägt einen Stoffmantel, eine Lende mit Pflanzenblättern und Pflanzenblättern als Haarschmuck. Bananenpflanze im Hintergrund. 1822. Veröffentlicht in: Choris, Louis (1822) "Voyage pittoresque autour du monde: avec des portraits de sauvages s 'Amerique, d' Asie, a 'Afrique, et des iles du Grand Ocean / des paysages, des vues maritimes, et plusieurs objets d' histoire naturelle". At the 2017 census there were 7,750 island inhabitants—almost all living in the village of Hanga Roa on the sheltered west coast. As of 2011, Rapa Nui's main source of income derived from tourism, which focuses on the giant sculptures called moai. Over the past decade, Rapa Nui activists have been fighting for self-determination and sovereignty over their lands.[clarification needed] Protests in 2010 and 2011 by the indigenous Rapa Nui on Easter Island, objecting to the creation of a marine park and reserve, have led to clashes with Chilean police.
