Despite the savings in material costs, the tall engi- neer knew there must be better ways of testing thecrystal units that are used to control frequencies intransmission systems. The trouble was, if somethingwent wrong in making the units, feedback of thecause was critically delayed — even an hour wouldbe too long. By then the damage was done; a wholebatch of crystals might be ruined. After long hours of study. Bill submitted a proposalfor an on-line, real-time computerized testing systemto the plants cost reduction committee. The com-mittee liked what it heard: the use of new tech-nology for process control, audit and quality reports— now, while its happening, and estimated savingsof about a half a million dollars a year.
