S72-35347 (16. April 1972) --- Das riesige, 363 Fuß hohe Raumfahrzeug Apollo 16 (Raumsonde 113 / Mondmodul 11 / Saturn 511) wird am 16. April 1972 um 12: 54: 00.569 Uhr (EST) von Pad A, Startkomplex 39, Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida, zu einer Mondlandung gestartet. An Bord der Apollo 16-Sonde befanden sich die Astronauten John W. Young, Kommandant; Thomas K. Mattingly II, Kommandomodulpilot; und Charles M. Duke Jr., Mondmodulpilot. Während die Astronauten Young und Duke im Mondmodul (LM) "Orion" abstiegen, um das Descartes-Hochland des Mondes zu erkunden, blieb Astronaut Mattingly bei den Command and Service Modulen (CSM) "Casper" im Mondorbit.
