Der Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts war für Frauen im Westen eine Zeit dramatischer Veränderungen. Im späten viktorianischen Zeitalter wurden Frauen durch eine patriarchalische Sozialstruktur eingeschränkt. Doch im frühen 20. Jahrhundert entstand die Suffragette-Bewegung, der Katalysator für den raschen gesellschaftlichen Wandel, der sich im weiteren Verlauf des Jahrhunderts ereignete. Da sich ihnen andere Karrieremöglichkeiten als Ehe und Mutterschaft eröffneten, engagierten sich Frauen in der Politik, dienten in den beiden Weltkriegen, beeinflussten die künstlerische und literarische Welt und erlebten soziale und sexuelle Befreiung. Zwischen 1880 und 1910 stieg die Zahl der erwerbstätigen Frauen in den Vereinigten Staaten von 2,6 Millionen auf 7,8 Millionen. Frauenorganisationen in Städten überall in den USA arbeiteten daran, das Wahlrecht, bessere Schulen, die Regulierung von Kinderarbeit, Frauen in Gewerkschaften und Alkoholverbote zu fördern. Durch die Betonung traditioneller Merkmale schufen sich Sozialreformerinnen neue Freiräume in der lokalen und dann in der nationalen Regierung, noch bevor sie das Wahlrecht hatten.
