KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - This view reveals all three Multi-Purpose Logistics Modules on the floor of the Space Station Processing Facility.  This is the first time all three - Leonardo, Raffaello and Donatello -- have been in one location.  Donatello has been stored in the Operations and Checkout Building since its arrival at KSC and was brought into the SSPF for routine testing. The MPLMs were built by the Italian Space Agency, to serve as reusable logistics carriers and the primary delivery system to resupply and return station cargo requiring a pressurized environment.  Raffaello is scheduled to fly on Space Shuttle Atlantis on mission STS-114.

A new three-place North American O-47A observation airplane with Army Air Corps marking was the first ircraft to arrive at Ames. The Circular antenna on top of the canopy is for direction finding.  A close look show that help from the front cockpit was needed for directional control when using a rope (instead of a tow bar) to tow the aircraft.  (Sept 1940). W.H. McAvoy Ames test pilot returning from an early flight of first test airplane at Ames, a North American O-47A-1 (or 0-47 AAC37-323) This aircraft severed for a short time upon arrival as a research aircraft for heated-wing deicing. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - In the Operations and Checkout Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, members of space shuttle Endeavour's STS-130 crew put on their launch-and-entry suits before heading to the Astrovan for the ride to Launch Pad 39A. The crew is participating in a dress rehearsal for their upcoming launch, known as the Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test.  Making his second spaceflight on STS-130 is Mission Specialist Nicholas Patrick, seen here in his helmet.    The primary payload for the STS-130 mission is the International Space Station's Tranquility node, a pressurized module that will provide room for many of the station's life support systems. Attached to one end of Tranquility is a cupola, a unique work area with six windows on its sides and one on top.  The cupola resembles a circular bay window and will provide a vastly improved view of the station's exterior. The multi-directional view will allow the crew to monitor spacewalks and docking operations, as well as provide a spectacular view of Earth and other celestial objects. The module was built in Turin, Italy, by Thales Alenia Space for the European Space Agency.  Launch of STS-130 is targeted for Feb. 7. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Inside the RLV Hangar near NASA Kennedy Space Center’s Shuttle Landing Facility, or SLF, in Florida, students and their flight instructors from Florida Tech, FIT, in Melbourne view F104 Starfighter aircraft and hear a presentation from Starfighter Director Rick Svetkoff. The group arrived at the SLF in Cherokee Warrior and Cessna 172S lightweight aircraft.    The middle and high school students are participating in FIT’s Av/Aero summer camp experience. Atlantis is being prepared for display in the 90,000-square-foot facility, scheduled to open June 29, 2013. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- This sunrise view from the stern of Freedom Star, one of NASA's solid rocket booster retrieval ships, shows the Pegasus Barge carrying the Space Shuttle Program's last external fuel tank, ET-122. The tank will travel 900 miles by sea to NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida before being offloaded and moved to Kennedy's Vehicle Assembly Building. There it will be integrated to space shuttle Endeavour for the STS-134 mission to the International Space Station.        The tank, which is the largest element of the space shuttle stack, was damaged during Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 and restored to flight configuration by Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company employees. When completed, the tower will be approximately 345 feet tall and have multiple platforms for personnel access. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -  This bird's-eye view of a high bay in the Orbiter Processing Facility (OPF) shows the open payload bay of Space Shuttle Discovery surrounded by the standard platforms and equipment required to process a Space Shuttle orbiter.  The high bay is 197 feet (60 meters) long, 150 feet (46 meters) wide, 95 feet (29 meters) high, and encompasses a 29,000-square-foot (2,694-meter) area.  The 30-ton (27-metric-ton) bridge crane (yellow device, right) has a hook height of approximately 66 feet (20 meters).  Platforms, a main access bridge, and two rolling bridges with trucks provide access to various parts of the orbiter.  In addition to routine servicing and checkout, the inspections and modifications made to enhance Discovery's performance and upgrade its systems were performed in the OPF during its recently completed Orbiter Major Modification (OMM) period.

The light is reflected in waters all around the Launch Pad 39A while clouds of steam and smoke roll away from the pad. Liftoff occurred at 6:11:10 a.m. EDT. The mission is taking the crew of seven to the International Space Station to deliver logistics and supplies as well as to prepare the Station for the arrival of the Zvezda Service Module, expected to be launched by Russia in July 2000. Also, the crew will conduct one space walk and will reboost the space station from 230 statute miles to 250 statute miles. This will be the third assembly flight to the Space Station. In view is the Space Shuttle Atlantis facility. Orion made the 2,700 mile overland trip from Naval Base San Diego in California. Orion was recovered from the Pacific Ocean after completing a two-orbit, four-and-a-half hour mission Dec. 5 to test systems critical to crew safety, including the launch abort system, the heat shield and the parachute system. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. –  A view from above of repairs made to the walls of the Launch Pad 39A flame trench at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.  Workers sprayed a heat-resistant concrete called Fondue Fyre into steel grid structures, welded to the wall of the flame trench. Fondue Fyre was developed during NASA's Apollo lunar program.  Damage to the trench occurred during the launch of space shuttle Discovery on the STS-124 mission.  A 75-foot by 20-foot section of the east wall was destroyed and debris scattered as far as the pad perimeter fence. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Members of the North American Treaty Organization (NATO) Parliamentary Assembly  get a close look at a Space Shuttle main engine in the Vehicle Assembly Building during their tour of KSC.   The Parliamentarians are meeting in Orlando this year for their 49th annual gathering.  They chose to visit KSC with their families during their one-day excursion break from meetings.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. –  In Orbiter Processing Facility bay 3 at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, technicians secure the remote manipulator system, or RMS, removed from space shuttle Discovery onto a storage platform.  The RMS is used to grab, or grapple, the payload as well as retrieve, repair and deploy satellites; provide a mobile extension ladder for spacewalking crewmembers; and be used as an inspection aid to allow flight crew members to view the orbiter’s or payload’s surfaces through a TV camera on the arm. The water-surrounded expanse of KSC is obvious in this aerial photo. At the center front is the Shuttle Landing Facility's (SLF) parking facility with its mate/demate device on the left corner. Beyond it runs Kennedy Parkway North, a route that passes the Vehicle Assembly Building seen in the upper right corner. At right is the tow-way, connecting the Orbiter Processing Facility with the SLF. Between it and the SLF parking area is the remote launch vehicle hangar, still under construction. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – In the Space Station Processing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Bernardo Patti, at left, head of International Space Station, Program Department, European Space Agency, and Michael Suffredini, program manager, International Space Station, NASA, sign documents transferring the ownership of node 3 for the International Space Station from the European Space Agency, or ESA, to NASA.    Node 3 is named "Tranquility" after the Sea of Tranquility, the lunar landing site of Apollo 11.  The payload for the STS-130 mission, Tranquility is a pressurized module that will provide room for many of the International Space Station's life support systems. The module was built for ESA by Thales Alenia Space in Turin, Italy. Attached to one end of Tranquility is a cupola, a unique work station with six windows on its sides and one on top.  The cupola resembles a circular bay window and will provide a vastly improved view of the station's exterior. Just under 10 feet in diameter, the module will accommodate two crew members and portable workstations that can control station and robotic activities. The multi-directional view will allow the crew to monitor spacewalks and docking operations, as well as provide a spectacular view of Earth and other celestial objects.
