21st annual convention of U.S. Chamber of Commerce in session. Washington, D.C., June 19. 2,000 delegates assembled in the Mayflower Hotel today for the formal opening of the 21st annual convention of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce. Caustically condemning the dictatorship of Hitler and Mussolini, Perry Pipkin, Tennessee, president of the gathering, today declared that isolation is a dead issue and that the United States must be inseparably bound to England and France if the 'Atlantic Civilization' is to survive. Pipkin recommended to the delegates that immediate steps be taken to work out a referendum system to reflect an organization opinion of such issues as a national defense. Makes light speak like Biblical burning bush. Like the voice speaking to Moses from the burning bush as described in the Bible, Sergius P. Grace, Assistant Vice-President of the Bell Telephone Laboratories, makes speech and music issue from the burning electric arc in the center of the projector shown in the photograph. Alexander Graham Bell first experimented with the "talking flame" as early as 1875, using bright rays of sunlight as the base. Bell scientists are again working on the theory, hoping to make some practical use of it. Grace, at the left, is assisted by R.M. Pease, right, a member of the Bell technical staff. 12/30

Fitness of Senator Black is topic? Washington, D.C., Aug. 17. No doubt but the gist of this conversation was the fitness of Senator Hugo L. Black to be a Supreme Court Justice. Senator Arthur Capper (left) Republican of Kansas, and Senator Royal Copeland, Democrat of New York who is bitterly opposing the nomination of the Alabama Senator, pictured in a huddle as they ride the Senate subway today enroute to the Senate chamber for the debate of the fitness of Black. Copeland raised the Ku Klux Klan issue on the floor when he declared that he felt "outraged by this proposal to put a Klan sympathizer on the Supreme Court" 8/17/37

"Putting the blast on." Washington, D.C., Aug. 9. At a specially called press conference today, Senator Royal Copeland of New York, charged that President Roosevelt "does more in five minutes to destroy democratic harmony than can be re-established in a generation of Jefferson Island picnics and peace dinners." He also told newsmen that the president's opposition to candidacy for the New York Mayorality is "directly tied in" with court issue. Copeland fought the court reorganization plan, 8/9/37
