Mr. H. Ormand, who is a leading jeweler in San Leandro, California, came to the United States from the Azores Islands twenty-three years ago when he was seventeen years old. For three years he lived in San Francisco and then moved to Oakland where he worked in a jewelry store for ten years. In 1932 he opened his own store in San Leandro. Mr. Ormond and his wife have worked long hours to build their establishment and now hold a respected position in the social and business life of San Leandro. Mr. Ormond said, "I received my education as a boy in the Azores but I have found that all the things that I learned there as well as the principles of honesty amd integrity and thrift and industry that my parents taught me have served me well in my adopted country. While I now speak a different language, all the principles of life in the United States and the Azores are the same."

Mr. Anthony B. Thomas, one of the leading druggists of San Leandro and also a three-term city coucilman, is of Portuguese descent. His father, a whaler who was born on the Flores Island of the Azores, and his mother came to the United States and settled in Provincetown, Massachusetts eighty-five years ago. In 1882 the entire family came overland to the East Bay area and established their home in San Leandro which was fast becoming a thriving Portuguese community. Mr. Thomas' father wanted him to be a whaler, but after finishing high school, he decided that he would prefer to be a druggist and studied to that purpose. The people of San Leandro, in recognition of his ability as a leader, have elected him three times a member of the five-man council board. Mr. Thomas says, "We are all Americans now and I am proud to be part of a democratic government and always want to do my share on any democratic government and planning board."

Mrs. Mary N. Silveira, who is managing editor of the Portuguese Journal, was born in the Azores Islands. She and her husband have owned and published this Portuguese paper since 1917. Mr. Silveira has been sick for the last five years and Mrs. Silveira has been in full charge of the paper. "Through the medium of this Portuguese language newspaper, we are able to reach those older members of the community and state who have not learned the English language. Many of those people speak English, but as far as the written language is concerned we have been mostly interested in giving to the Portuguese a full coverage of local, national and international news because we believe that by this way the people of Portuguese descent become better citizens of the United States." says Mrs. Silveira

He is the director of the hour-long daily program in the Portuguese language over station KROW, Oakland, California. He is also a Minuteman. "For my part, I have always considered it a privilege to be a citizen of this country and in my radio activities I have always felt that it was not only a pleasure, but that I was discharging part of my duty to keep the Portuguese people of this state informed. You know, it is said that the best people are the best informed people and I believe that too," says Mr. Avila. He continued: "There has always been a bond between the people of Portugal and those of the United States, and now between those of us who have come to make our homes in this country and those of you that have always belonged here, there has been a bond welded so tightly and securely that we are one and inseparable
